Who can join
You're welcome on a Peaks to Peace trip if you:
- Are a U.S. military veteran of any branch (Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force or Coast Guard) and any era. That includes members of the National Guard and Reserve, and current service members.
- Received any discharge other than dishonorable (if you've separated from service). We may ask for simple verification, such as a DD-214, a VA ID card, or a veteran designation on a state driver license or ID.
- Live in Utah, or nearby. Utah residents come first, and veterans from nearby states are welcome when there's room.
- Are 18 or older.
- Can safely take part in the trip you choose. Please compare each trip's difficulty rating with your current fitness, health and experience, and pick trips that fit. If you're not sure, ask us and we'll help you choose.
- Complete a short health questionnaire before your first trip, and update it every 12 months or whenever your health changes. It helps leaders plan and respond well in an emergency. We don't require a doctor's sign-off. Sharing a health condition doesn't automatically rule you out, and we'll work with you where we can.
- Will stay sober on trips: no alcohol, cannabis or recreational drugs during the trip, and don't arrive impaired.
- Can follow leader and guide instructions, especially about safety, route changes and turning back, and will treat fellow participants, volunteers and other trail users with respect.
Guests are welcome with a veteran
Family members, friends and other non-veterans may join a trip when they're coming along with a participating veteran. Guests must be 18 or older, complete the same health questionnaire, and sign the same participant waiver as everyone else. Everything in the list above, except the service and discharge items, applies to guests too.
Volunteers
Love the outdoors and want to support veterans? Volunteers help on the trail and behind the scenes, and you don't need to be a veteran. Volunteers sign the same waiver as participants. Tell us how you'd like to help.
How to sign up
- Say hello. Tell us a little about yourself and what interests you. Questions first? Email hello@peakstopeace.org anytime.
- Fill out our Join form. Our short Join form takes just a few minutes. We'll follow up with info on upcoming trips.
- Complete your paperwork. Before your first trip, you (and any guest coming with you) will fill out the health questionnaire, provide an emergency contact, and sign our participant waiver electronically.
- Pick a trip. Choose one that matches your comfort level. We'll send the meeting place, gear list and plan beforehand.
- Show up and enjoy it. Bring water, snacks, and whatever else is on the gear list.
What's free
Trips are free for veterans. Leaders bring group safety gear like the first aid kit, and the trip listing will tell you about anything else that's covered.
- Guests: some outings have a cost for guests. It's set for each trip, shared with you before the trip, and paid securely through Stripe.
- What you bring: you're responsible for your own transportation to the meeting point, your personal gear and clothing, and your own food and water, unless the trip listing says otherwise.
- Gear: if cost is a barrier to getting the right gear, please tell us. Peaks to Peace lends gear when it's available, though we can't guarantee it.
Our right to decline or remove participants
Safety comes first for the whole group. Peaks to Peace may decline a trip registration, ask someone to choose a different trip, or remove a participant from a trip (or from future trips) if we believe it's necessary for safety. Examples include a health or fitness concern for that particular trip, impairment, not following leader or guide instructions, or behavior that puts others at risk or makes them feel unsafe. We'll always try to handle this privately and respectfully and, where possible, help you find a better-fit option.
